Ramesh Aravind has starred in over 140 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, solidifying his position as one of the industry's leading stars. Known for his versatility and charm, Ramesh delivered numerous memorable performances in iconic films such as Uttara Druvadhi, America America, Rama Shama Bhama, Nammoora Mandara Hoove, Amrutha Varshini, and Sathi Leelavathi . These timeless classics continue to resonate with audiences, showcasing his ability to excel in a wide range of roles, from romantic leads to comedic characters.
During his engineering studies, Ramesh worked as an emcee at various award functions, including one celebrating the success of Sagara Sangamam (1983), where he met his long-time collaborator, Kamal Haasan. He began his television career by hosting a show Parichaya on DD and made his film debut with acclaimed director K. Balachander, who cast him as a playboy in Sundara Swapnagalu (1986), followed by a supporting role in Mouna Geethe .
Although a small role in Punnagai Mannan (1986) was ultimately cut, Aravind received critical acclaim for his performance in Manathil Uruthi Vendum (1987). He made his mark in Telugu cinema through Balachander's Rudraveena , successfully breaking into three film industries thanks to the director's support.
Ramesh achieved breakthrough success portraying a student union leader in the romantic drama Keladi Kanmani (1990). Following this, he relocated to Chennai, focusing on Tamil and Kannada films until 1996. He garnered praise for his roles in Duet (1994) and Sathi Leelavathi (1995), collaborating frequently with Kamal Haasan in projects like Panchathantiram (2002) and Mumbai Xpress (2005). After returning to the Kannada film industry, he featured in a string of successful films, including Anuraga Sangama, Namoora Mandara Hoove, AmrutaVarshini, America America , Tutta Mutta, followed year later with Apta Mitra, RamaShamaBhama and to recent hits like Shivaji Suratkal becoming one of the highest-paid actors in the industry. His most recent notable appearance was in Shivaji Surathkal 2 , released in theaters on April 14, 2023.
Writer with a Passion for Storytelling
Ramesh Aravind scripted the film Hoomale in 1998, marking the beginning of his directing career. The film earned him both the Best Actor Filmfare Award and the Karnataka State Award. He further showcased his storytelling prowess with the script for Amrithadhare (2005), which won him the Raghvendra Chitravani Award for Best Story.
In addition to his work in film, Ramesh has authored several books. His Kannada book, Art of Success , a collection of his quotes, became a bestseller. His recent work, Preetiyinda Ramesh , achieved remarkable success, with five editions released within just five months of its launch. He has also written and narrated the Kannada audiobook MasadaMaatu with Ramesh , available on Storytel.
In 2024, his acclaimed bestseller Preetiyinda Ramesh from 2022-2023 was translated into Tamil as Anbudan Ramesh .
A Journey from Actor to Acclaimed Director
Ramesh Aravind made his directorial debut with Rama Shama Bhama , featuring Kamal Haasan. Following this, he directed Sathyavan Savithri and Accident . He has directed 10 films so far including Venkata in Sankata , Sundaranga Jaana and 100 .
When Kamal Haasan approached Ramesh to direct the Tamil film Uttama Villain , he eagerly accepted the offer. This film marked the first time Aravind directed a project without taking on a leading role. He was drawn to the challenging nature of the script and the opportunity to work with his mentor, K. Balachander.
